John Lennon -- Imagine

John tried his best to see through the haze of campaign lies…

Well, it’s Election Day here in the U.S., in case you’ve been living in a cave the last 12 months or so. And all I can say is thank goodness, let’s get this over with. I’m pretty tired of hearing the negativity, and lies masquerading as debating points. Whoever wins, you might say we’ll get what we deserve.

But nobody put the feeling of an election season into better perspective than John Lennon, 40 years ago, on 1971’s Imagine, when he recorded “Give Me Some Truth” (also commonly known as “Gimme Some Truth” — but technically, it’s “Give Me Some Truth” on the album track listing):

I’m sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocritics
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth

I’ve had enough of reading things
By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth

No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of Tricky Dicky
Is gonna mother hubbard soft-soap me
With just a pocketful of hope
Money for dope
Money for rope

I’m sick to death of seeing things
From tight-lipped, condescending, mama’s little chauvinists
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth now

Ive had enough of watching scenes
Of schizophrenic, ego-centric, paranoiac, prima-donnas
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth

I couldn’t agree more.
