Sam & Dave / ZZ Top: “I Thank You”
Sam & Dave (1968)
ZZ Top (1978)
There are all sorts of sappy “thank you”-type songs that one could choose as a Thanksgiving song offering, but frankly, those songs just aren’t suited for Reselect. Instead, I think something a bit grittier and groovier would do quite nicely, and one of the songs that best fits that bill is “I Thank You,” a song recorded by Sam & Dave, written for them by Isaac Hayes and David Porter (co-writers also of other Sam & Dave hits “Soul Man” and “Hold On! I’m Coming”). Sam & Dave released it on their 1968 album, I Thank You, and the song made it to #9 on the Billboard pop singles chart. Ten years later, ZZ Top did a funky, bluesy cover of it on their Deguello album, on which it was the lead track (their version reached #34 on the charts).
I’d venture to say that ZZ Top gets more airplay with their version these days, but in the spirit of the holiday, let’s be doubly thankful and take a listen to both great versions. Call it a Cover Thursday, if you will (especially since I won’t be posting on Friday this week)…
And indeed, I thank you, the readers of this blog, for taking the time to check back in from time to time and following along with the fun. Have a great Thanksgiving, and for those of you not celebrating the holiday (i.e., non-Americans), I hope you have plenty to be thankful for as well.
Great song. I always favoured the ZZTop version, although I like Sam &Dave, very much! And I guess a Thank you, is in order for this wonderful blog!
Thanks! I appreciate your appreciation!
