Get the hell out of there, Shorty! There’s a flash flood coming right behind you!

Reselect is taking a break from New Music Monday this week to conjure up a little nasty-weather music for those of you on the East Coast of the U.S. For all friends and family in the path of Hurricane Sandy, may this funky instrumental track from New Orleans jazz musician Trombone Shorty (my fingers keep wanting to type “Hurricane Shorty”) keep you safe by driving away the bad-weather demons that would otherwise wreak havoc on trees, power lines, and water levels in your area. “Hurricane Season” is the lead track from Trombone Shorty’s 2010 album, Backatown — it’s a potent groove track, with a great horn section (as you might well have guessed) underpinned by a heavy rhythm-section thump. It’s not hard to see why Trombone Shorty (aka Troy Andrews, who probably knows a thing or two about hurricanes, coming as he does from New Orleans) has been invited to tour with numerous rock musicians and has made many late-night TV appearances — a track like “Hurricane Season” is infectious stuff, the kind of music that demands your attention. Much like a massive hurricane heading right toward your state.
